We are a Non- Christian Nation

I read and I hear people, religious and non-religious, say that America is a “christian” nation. They say this country was founded on christian values and  that our founding fathers meant for our country to be based on christian teachings. This is not true and people should stop spreading this lie. They even go on further to say our founding fathers were christian. This is true but the key members of our founding fathers were deists. George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Jay, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, James Madison, and Alexander Hamilton were the key founding fathers and they believed in God but did not want God to be the basis of our nation, except for John Jay.

Thomas Jefferson created his own bible. George Washington rarely went to church. John Adams wrote in a letter to Samuel Miller “I must acknowledge that I cannot class myself under that denomination.”  James Madison, the Father of the Constitution, wrote in his memorial and remonstrance  religious assessments “During almost fifteen centuries has the legal establishment of Christianity been on trial. What have been its fruits? More or less in all places, pride and indolence in the Clergy, ignorance and servility in the laity; in both, superstition, bigotry and persecution.”

“What influence, in fact, have ecclesiastical establishments had on society? In some instances they have been seen to erect a spiritual tyranny on the ruins of the civil authority; on many instances they have been seen upholding the thrones of political tyranny; in no instance have they been the guardians of the liberties of the people. Rulers who wish to subvert the public liberty may have found an established clergy convenient auxiliaries. A just government, instituted to secure and perpetuate it, needs them not.” Benjamin Franklin rebelled against his parents religion and revealed his skepticism of religion in his auto biography.

Then there’s the Treaty of Tripoli and most importantly Article 11 of the Treaty of Tripoli. Article 11 reads “As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion,—as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquility, of Mussulmen,—and as the said States never entered into any war or act of hostility against any Mahometan nation, it is declared by the parties that no pretext arising from religious opinions shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries.” This article states clearly we are not christian nation, but why do people still try to push that we are. Religious people try to say our government has gotten away from its christian values that’s why we have no moral background. And I say we have gotten away from our non-christian values and those  christian values have crippled and have forever bred an indifference for those who disagree those christian values.

Some Christian leaders and zealots refuse to admit we are not a christian nation. They use their misinformed logic to persecute homosexuals, atheists, Muslims, and any one who is in the least bit different. Newt Gingrich said that he wanted to make America more “christian”. A man who cheated on and left two of his wives while they were ill. A man who said he disagrees with child labor laws. A man who gave charity to himself said he wishes to make America more “christian”. I don’t have a problem with Christianity or any other religion but, I do believe a government run by any religion is only convenient for the religious. A government is responsible for everybody not just for the Christians.

Now some people will  argue that with out religion we would have no moral code. That is a bold faced lie. I don’t need a book written thousands of years that it is wrong to kill a person. I have a conscience and my conscience was developed not by going to church and listening to some homophobic ordained person speak. No, my conscience was developed on the playground where I learned to share and to play right. I learned right from wrong from my parents not some overly translated constantly changing book. We are Americans, some may be christian, some may be buddhist, some are muslim, and others don’t have a faith. And to say we are a christian nation is to disown Americans of other faiths. We are an American Nation, we are free to practice whatever religion we wish and we are free to refrain from being religious. This nation is no more a christian nation that it is socialist nation.
