TOO OLD, TOO YOUNG

I am too old to be governed by the fear of dumb people, good thing I live in a country governed by a representative democracy. That being said, I am also too young to to be governed by old peoples fears, fortunately for me I live in a country where there are more old people than young people. However, I am also lucky enough to understand that people change as well other things. Such as beliefs, religions, and ideologies. I believe that statement so much I’ll even call it a fact, especially the one about ideologies. I mean we can look through several decades and eras and you can see how the ideologies of the nation change.

In the late 1800’s through the early 1900’s you saw a shift to conservatism with a counter culture of secret liberalism, that lasted for the most part until 1933. Then in 1933 we saw a strongly democratic president take office for twelve years and he was followed by an equally strong democratic president. Then in mid 1940’s we saw a shift to the middle which lasted for a short while and in 1950 we saw a shift so far to the right, that people were being blacklisted for simply being accused of being a communist. Then in the 1960’s we saw the birth of modern liberalism we the inauguration of John F. Kennedy. Then after Johnson’s stint in office we saw a president take office who was slightly right of center but a counter culture that was far left of center. Finally we saw the birth of  what was known as modern conservatism with Ronald Reagan taking office. Reagan’s predecessor was a man who held the same beliefs as he but he couldn’t hold the office for eight years. His predecessor was Bill Clinton who was for the most part a left of center president. He led the nation to a prosperous era. He was then followed by George W. Bush who had a hard time keeping the nations economy afloat while dealing with two wars. While the second Bush was in office you saw people go farther to their respective ideologies.

Now we have a president who is having a hard time getting things done for a number of reasons. Obstructionism, a full plate, growing daughters, and other things. Under his control we have seen the two main ideologies split so far apart we haven’t seen the country divided like this since the Civil War. With as much divisiveness as we’re seeing one can say we are absolutely left for dry, unless we figure out a way to fix our differences. The way I see it, everyone is stupid even the most brilliant people. You know why? Because we all believe we have the answers. When in reality all we have is our mouths open trying to drown every body else because we believe we know what’s best and every body else is an idiot. The sooner we stop thinking we’re geniuses and every one else less than us the sooner can get back to being a united nation that disagrees on a few things instead of a divided nation that doesn’t agree on diddly squat.

What the Frack?

Me being the huge Battle Star Galactica fan I am, I was extremely intrigued when I wandered upon an article by the title of “What the Frak is Fracking?” I read the entire article and became even more intrigued. The article gave the jist of what fracking or hydraulic fracturing is but, it didn’t suffice I needed to know more about this process and if it had any negative ramifications.

Hydraulic fracturing is a fairly new technique used to extract natural gasses from the earth. It uses water to fracture the rocks through to the shale layer and allows companies to drill horizontally. Drilling horizontally allows for natural gas to be attained, barreled, and sold. Economically hydraulic fracturing is very sound, safe, and secure. Environmentally it is quite the opposite.

In places where fracking is a huge like Wyoming, New York, and Pennsylvania ramifications have mostly been negative environmentally. We have seen fracking make a huge profit in Pennsylvania but we’ve have also seen it destroy communities in New York. In some places in Wyoming people have to shower and wash clothes with open windows just to to protect their houses catching on fire from chemicals in the water. People can even light the water from their faucets on fire because the fumes released from fracking are poisoning peoples drinking.

What does the government have to say about hydraulic fracturing? They have actually allowed it. In 2005 President signed into law a bill allowing fracking companies to pollute drinking water even though America has a clean water act. And even though we have all this proof that fracking have negative ramifications Presidential Candidate Rick Santorum denies all the proof of the negative ramifications of fracking. It isn’t just Rick Santorum though, many republican congressmen and women deny any accounts of fracking gone wrong.

It’s kind of silly that even with proof people are still willing to deny fracking is bad. Scientists have done the research, people have lit their water on fire, and the water has a different taste. When I lived in Texas City, Texas, a place where fracking is done near, the water from the faucet was undrinkable. It had a weird taste and discoloring. The federal government has given the state governments the right to choose how to protect its citizens. Look how that turned out. The Republican Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett appointed a top energy executive with the job of taking care of fracking in the state.

The federal government has already given the states the right to take care oil companies once and look how that turned out. Rivers caught on fire and they didn’t stop catching on fire until the federal government intervened. I am still waiting for the government to intervene on fracking because frankly if they don’t America will be engulfed in flames with no way to put the flames out.

Political Satire Good Or Bad?

With Stephen Colbert joining the election in South Carolina people have been asking if political satire is good. To me it has some good and bad things to it but mostly good. Political satire allows people like Stephen Colbert or Jon Stewart to get the news out in a way where it’s not so boring. When I watch The O’Reilly factor, yes I watch that show too, I almost fall sleep every time but when watching The Colbert Report it seems that time goes by and I am left wanting to see more of his antics.

Political satire definitely does more good than bad. Yes, it may make important news seem like a joke but it also makes political shows more tolerable. I enjoy watching The O’Reilly and other shows alike but, I’m 18, my attention span doesn’t last as long as the dullness that drudges on on those shows. Bill O’Reilly has some valid points but, because of the same dull talking head style he uses those valid points get drowned by the dullness of his show. The Colbert Report and The Daily Show also use the talking head but they have enticing guests, graphics, and humor.

Although Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert may go overboard from time to time they mostly give the news the way it is. They are both democrats but they hold nothing back when anybody messes up. Bill O’Reilly is significantly harder on democratic leaders than he is on republican leaders and that’s fine because his show is an opinionated political show. Stewart’s and Colbert’s shows however are news show that should provide no bias and in most cases they don’t. Stewart did go a little soft on Rep. Anthony Weiner but the two are friends so I understand that.

Political satire in the form of Colbert and Stewart is not necessarily new but, it has only caught a lot of steam. As of yet we are unsure where this thing will go but, so it’s looking good. I truly hope it continues to do good and I truly hope people will stop complaining about a good thing. I enjoy Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert people need to learn to just slow down and laugh.

Block the Vote

All across the nation we are seeing republicans trying to “block the vote”. They are enforcing laws that would require voters to carry photo identification with them to the polls, in some places there are more radical changes. Now this wouldn’t be a problem but, at the beginning of 2011  the only states that had these laws previously were Georgia and Indiana. As of now, there are  eight states that have strict photo I.d. laws and fifteen states require photo I.d.s to vote. Strangely enough though, most of the states that require photo I.d. to vote are red states.

These laws would have a negative affect on many of the minorities as well as young people. To say these policies aren’t to make it harder for minorities to vote would be stupid and to say these policies aren’t a little racist that’d be equally stupid. Now, don’t get me wrong, I don’t believe the individuals that drafted these bills are racist but, I will say they definitely saw the benefit of constructing a law that would restrict the voting rights of people that were more likely to vote democrat.

Republicans say they set up these laws to help voter fraud. That’s a blatantly outlandish lie they used to cover up the fact they are doing everything they can to ensure Obama is a one term president. I’ve looked up the numbers and you are more likely to see a person struck by lightning than see a person commit voter fraud. In the last election there were only 9 possible occurrences of voter fraud and in that same year there were 352 deaths caused by lightning.

To put everything out there, these laws are beyond stupid. In most states that require photo I.d.s  to vote, a student I.d. wouldn’t work but, if you live in Texas you can use your gun license to vote. Sweet, I can use my gun license to vote but if I’m an out-of-state student and my university I.d. card is the only form of identification I have then I’m shit out of luck. That alone is ridiculous enough to make me want to slap every person in the Texas legislature. But on top of the ridiculous voter I.d. requirements republicans also want to cut out early voting, same day registration, and the way some people register. Two teachers in Florida were actually jailed and can face up to thousands in fines for helping their students register to vote. That’s beyond ridiculous, the republicans are getting to the point where the only people they care about are themselves and big government.

But the best way to beat this voter suppression is to get all the proper documents because if you don’t your voice won’t be heard. Don’t let them BLOCK THE VOTE
